Identify protected data
Equipment tags, models, material grades, formulae and reference numbers usually need to remain intact. Include tables, captions and attachments, not just body paragraphs, and record any client-specific symbol conventions.
Separate formatting from conversion
Decimal and thousands separators vary by locale, but formatting changes do not authorize numerical conversion. If units must change, agree the conversion basis, precision and reviewer; do not independently round engineering values.
Check the meaning around the data
Check qualifiers such as “greater than”, “no more than” and “at least”, as well as headings, notes and conditions. Identical figures with reversed conditions can still mislead. Refer technical uncertainties to the designated specialist.

A common question
Can all units be converted automatically?
Not without agreement. Establish the document’s purpose and technical requirements, then agree conversion rules, precision and specialist verification.
