How do translation memories and glossaries differ?

A glossary manages concepts and names; a translation memory stores translated segments. They work together, but historical translations are not automatically correct and still need context and revision checks.

Manage terms and segments separately

Product names, component names and fixed technical expressions belong in a glossary. Complete sentences, segments and approved standard wording can enter a memory. Even a close match may contain changed numbers, conditions or negation.

Establish a reliable baseline

Before import, confirm approval, alignment with the final source and any product, client or regional restrictions. Reusing faulty translations at scale can create more work than translating afresh.

Agree ownership and handover

For recurring work, agree permitted use, formats, access and end-of-project handover. Content from different clients or confidentiality levels should not be mixed without permission. Public tools must also follow the agreed project rules.

A common question

Does an exact match still need checking?

It still needs contextual assessment. A changed model, reference, market or surrounding tone can make an earlier translation unsuitable.
