will begin their pursuit for the crown this weekend as the Greater
Pottsville Winter Carnival kicks off.

Jan. 30 and Queen coronation on Feb. 6.

The contestants will begin the 49th annual carnival with Princess

carnival. The girls will sell the 2016 carnival buttons with this year’s
theme, “A Little Taste of Country,” from 11 a.m. to noon at Fairlane
Village mall and 1 p.m. in downtown Pottsville. The buttons are 2
dollars.

The Snowflake Princess contestants are juniors from area high schools,
while the women competing for Queen range in age from 18 and 29. Nancy
Roberts, Snowdrop/Snowflake pageant chairwoman, said there are 22
Snowflake contestants and 21 Queen contestants. The Snowdrop contestants
are second- and third-graders in area schools. Roberts said there are 31
girls this year.

A new addition to this year’s carnival is a Princess Saturday party
for the Snowdrop contestants. The girls don’t participate in Princess
Saturday events, but this year carnival organizers wanted some way to
include them in the opening day activities.

“It’s a party to just have fun and they don’t have to worry about
being judged,” Carole Lee, Snowdrop chairwoman, said. It will be held

St., Pottsville.

little addition to the Winter Carnival and the girls are very excited,”
